Vipers, KCCA in tricky league ties

By Andrew Mwanguhya

KAMPALA. Four StarTimes Uganda Premier League (SUPL) sides all go into today’s round of fixtures each with a chance of ending the day top.
With the unlikely early leaders Bright Stars not in action until tomorrow, champions Vipers, giants KCCA, URA, and surprise package Bul could all further underline their intentions with victories today.

Manager Mike Mutebi will trust his young gun Allan Okello to again lead KCCA’s charge when they host coach Charles Ayiekoh’s Kirinya-Jinja at StarTimes Stadium. Okello scored a long range beauty in the 2-1 victory over Tooro United last Friday.
“The kid is progressing,” said Mutebi of Okello, “You can see he is.

“As far as I’m concerned, for as long as he is healthy, I can’t name my team without him. Of course there are things he is still learning.”
KCCA just edged Kirinya-Jinja 2-1 and 0-1 last season but Ayiekoh, who believes they have a decent shot at the title after finishing fifth in the previous campaign, says today’s will be even tougher.

“To become champions you have to beat the big ones,” he said, “And you saw last season, it was really close.”
Kirinya opened their campaign with a come-from-behind 2-2 draw with SC Villa, Joel Madondo grabbing a brace.

Across at Luzira, Maroons, who lost their opener 1-3 away to Bright Stars, will look to frustrate champions Vipers if they are to get their own season in motion. “We shall do all it takes not to lose our second match in a row,” said Maroons coach George ‘Best’ Nsimbe, “We are at home and we want to make it count.”
Vipers Mexican coach Javier Martinez Espinoza said his team, who needed a late Davis Kasirye goal to beat Ndejje University, would take at least “three to four games” to gel.

He brings them to a ground where Vipers were held 1-1 last season.
The other potentially interesting one is at Wankululuku, where Express – who had an eventful pre-season on and off the pitch, start their campaign against URA. Elsewhere, Mbarara have been reinstated in the fixtures after successfully appealing their earlier expulsion over licensing.
