Top swimmers face test at GEMS

Uganda swimming Federation (USF) and the school launched the annual event Wednesday at the school campus.

Top national swimmers will have to prove their worth in the annual National swimming Sprint championship that starts on Saturday at Gems Cambridge International School.

USF president Donald Rukare said the sprints are only for the elite swimmers who form part of the national team.

“This is going to be an event for only the elite swimmers and will be competed in all classes in swimming with the toughest being 100m individual medley,” Rukare said.

He said the sprints will help Uganda athletes improve on performance because it will create stiff competition among the top sixteen elite swimmers in each category.

“We are inviting the top sixteen swimmers in each category and the top three in each category wins medals, while the overall top winner will take trophies plus medals,” He explained.

The event sponsored by Gems Cambridge International School will be annual and middle distance races will be added in the coming editions.

Harvey Trump, the school principal assured USF that his school is committed to giving children opportunities to develop their talents through supporting Olympic sports.

“We are grateful to this partnership and we shall continue to support Olympic sports especially swimming to improve on our athletes’ performance at international level,” Trump said.

The athletes will battle it out in the U-15, U-11& U-12, U-13 & U-14, and the U-10 years categories.
