Police in Kakumiro District are investigating circumstances under which three Ugandan nationals died at a borehole site.
Police said the deceased were employees of Omwana Tugende children’s home which is located in Igayaza town council in Kakumiro District.
“Three of the workers died while cleaning a shallow borehole,” the Albertine regional Police spokesperson Mr Julius Hakiza said on Sunday.
Police has identified the deceased as John Tweheyo, Alex Twesigye and Dankan Musinguzi.
The incident occurred at about 2pm on Saturday at Nyakagera Village in Kakumiro District.
It is alleged that the three had removed a well-head of the borehole.
One of them went underground to fix some mechanical faults that had caused the well not to pump the water.
He, however, did not return. This forced the two to also go underground to establish what befell their colleague. They all died underground. It is suspected that they suffocated.
The bodies have been retrieved from the site and a postmortem has been done by a medical officer attached to Kakumiro District local government.
The acting Kakumiro District health officer Mr Robert Senteza said a postmortem report has confirmed that they died of suffocation.
