Residents of Sheema North constituency on Monday took to the polls to elect their representative in Parliament amid heavy Police deployment.

The area, which altogether has 65 polling stations and 34575 registered voters, was left without an MP following the resignation of Dr Elioda Tumwesigye.

Tumwesigye, who is also the science, technology and innovation minister, resigned in August after being elected Sheema Municipality MP. This was one of the municipalities created in 2015.

The contest is between Naome Kibaaju of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Guma Nuwagaba of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Both candidates cast their votes early on Monday morning and they expressed optimism that they would emerge victors and both vowed to accept the outcome after elections.

Kibaaju cast her vote at 10:00am at Masheruka Modern polling station while Guma cast his vote at Buringo polling station at 9:00am.

Electoral Commission (EC) spokesperson Jotham Taremwa said the election was calm and that they put in place enough security to ensure people cast their vote peacefully.

“The process is going on well and peaceful, voting started on time in all polling stations. We call up on all people who have not gone to the polling stations to go and vote because we are remaining with few hours to the closing time” Taremwa said.

Polls close at 5:00pm.
