Policeman shoots one dead at students’ party

Nwoya- Police in Nwoya District are holding one of their own for allegedly shooting dead one person and injuring another while quelling riotous students during a Senior Four farewell party.

Police constable Gideon Aluma, working at Anaka Police Post, allegedly shot at the victims on Friday from Anaka Intensive Secondary School.
The deceased was identified as Denis Opiyo,24, while Fiona Atimango,15, a Senior Two student at the school, sustained injuries.

The Aswa River Region police spokesperson, Mr Jimmy Patrick Okema, said the suspect had been deployed with other police officers to quell chaos that had erupted during the farewell party organised by the school management.

Mr Okema said Aluma in the process fired five bullets which hit the deceased and injured the other student.

Mr Okema added that Opiyo died due to excessive bleeding while being taken to Anaka Hospital.

“The community joined the students to dance at the school, initially the farewell party was to end at 6pm but it proceeded up to 9pm. When the school authorities stopped the music at 9pm, both students and locals started pelting stones prompting them [authorities] to call the police,” he said.

According to Mr Okema, Atimango is still nursing hand injuries. He said the suspect is being held at Nwoya Central Police Station as investigations continue.

Mr Denis Okema, the LCIII chairperson of Anaka Town Council, condemned the act of students and the community. He, however, urged the students to remain calm, saying police are carrying out investigation.
