Kampala- Uganda Breweries boast the first Ugandan beer to be brewed in Uganda in 1950.

On their return to domestic club football after a five year absence, they will be remembered as the first sponsors of a new pre-season football tournament “Super 8”.

“The way you hear of the champions league elsewhere, the Super 8 is our champions league here,” Pilsner Lager brand manager Catherine Twesigye said at the launch of the tournament held at Uganda Breweries plant in Luzira yesterday

The brand popularly known as the “King’s beer” will offer shs90m for the tournament that will involve six of the top seven sides from the topflight league last season with the exception of Vipers who opted out.

League debutants Ndejje University and Nyamityobora who earned automatic promotion complete the teams for the tournament that starts this Saturday.

For Fufa marketing and Communications committee chairperson Rogers Byamukama and Marketing Director, Esther Musoke, the sponsorship represents another coup for the current administration that continues to attract more corporate bodies.

“In the five year development plan of the Federation, one of the key pillars in football development is that of competitions. At the start of the year, we started with the FUFA Drum and now we have the Super eight.

We thank Pilsner Lager for the timely support. It was here before but they have now returned,” Byamukama remarked. The tournament will meanwhile also mark the return of a major preseason tournament where fans get a glimpse of the top sides’ new recruits since the heady days of the Hedex Cup, last played 16 years ago.

Up to shs30m is on offer as prize money with the winner earning shs10m, losing finalists shs5m. Other semifinalists will walk away with shs3.5m while the four other participants will each get shs2m
With league champions Vipers opting out, second seeded KCCA were tentatively drawn to play the opening fixture against Bul at Lugogo in the tournament that will be played on knockout basis.
