BUIKWE- The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the newly created Njeru municipality, Mr Yassin Kyazze, has been declared Mayor, beating four other competitors.
According to the results announced by the Electoral Commission at Buikwe District headquarters on Saturday morning, Mr Kyazze got 15,248 votes, Ms Diana Mutasingwa Nakunda (Ind) garnered 5,343 votes while Mr Amos Wasswa Kivumbi (FDC) got 4,286 votes.
Mr Ceaser Kalema (ind) got 3,838 votes, Mr Aziz Jjunju (Ind) got 2,151 votes and Mr Joseph Opondo Opondo (Ind) garnered 261 votes.
Returning Officer collapses
Mr Kyazze was declared winner by the assistant returning officer, Ms Stella Byenkya, at 7:30am after the Buikwe District Returning Officer, Ms Anne Mary Atungwire, collapsed at 3am and was rushed to an unknown Hospital.
Mr Kyazze thanked his voters for electing him and promised to improve on the road network and urged the losers to join him in developing Njeru municipality.
Losers to petition court
The FDC candidate, Mr Amos Kivumbi, said he is going to petition Court challenging Kyazze’s victory, adding that the election was full of irregularities – especially voter bribery.
Mr Kivumbi accuses Mr Kyazze of donating an ambulance to voters which was given to him by President Museveni on Wednesday just two days to the polling day that swayed voters in his favour.
“Why should Mr Museveni donate an ambulance before the elections? I’m going to sue Kyazze basing on that donation,” Mr Kivuimbi said.
He added: “An ambulance is not a big problem in Njeru; the problem is hospitals because we still have Health Centre IIs and IIIs which lack drugs and staff. So, where will the ambulance take the patients because currently patients are being referred to Kawolo and Jinja Hospitals?”
Mr Kalema (ind), also vowed to go to Court and challenge Kyazze’s victory, citing the donation as ‘bribery of the highest order’.
President Museveni on Wednesday, through the Minister of Health, Ms Jane Ruth Achieng, who was represented by the Commissioner in-charge of emergency medical services in the Ministry of Health, Dr John Baptist Nambohe Waniaye, donated an ambulance to Mr Kyazze who handed it over to the municipality administrators at Njeru municipal headquarters.
This was in fulfillment of a promise he made on July 23 when he was campaigning for Mr Kyazze at Buwagajjo village, Nyenga Sub-County in Buikwe district.
