Kampala. Many a female National Basketball League player breaks through while at university before moving on to more established sides in the division.
Brenda Ekone though has not attracted such attention despite being around the top division for the last four seasons that included a regular season MVP award last season while at Nkumba University.
She offered a timely reminder about her abilities on Saturday afternoon, top scoring with 23 points as Nkumba Lady Marines, with only six players on the day’s roster stunned KCCA Leopards 54-46 at YMCA court.
The diminutive guard who is averaging 26 points for Nkumba this season made 47% of her shots from the field as her side improved to 6-7 this season. The defeat for KCCA leopards was meanwhile their third season and dented their hopes for top season status with champions UCU Lady Canons and emerging force JKL Ladies in close pursuit.
The latter recovered yesterday to defeat Javon Ladies 77-56 to improve to 11-3 with Christine Akinyi scoring a game high 15 points.
Results in the men’s top division were meanwhile straight forward on Saturday with Betway Power overcoming Charging Rhino 62-46 while champions City Oilers brushed aside 77-74 before their late game against Warriors last evening. Earlier yesterday KIU Titans made it five straight wins following a102-72 rout of UPDF.
Andrew Okot’s game high 25 points could be the only positive for a UPDF side that slumped to 4-15 this season.
Chris Omanye led the Titans with 24 points while Joseph Chuma added 14.
