The Ntungamo District woman Member of Parliament, Ms Beatrice Rwakimaari has attributed the rampant criminal cases in the district to its big size and geographical location.
According to Ms Rwakimaari, the big size of Ntungamo District has attracted notorious criminals and other intruders from the neighboring areas which is posing a big threat to the communities.
In the 2017 Police annual crime report, Ntungamo was ranked as the second district with high number of crimes committed.
Lira was ranked highest with 7,872, followed by Ntungamo district with 6,839 and Mbarara standing at 5,096 crimes.
Ms Rwakimaari proposed that the district should be divided to allow the security agencies operate effectively rather than harboring the criminals.
She made the remarks on Monday during the burial of Jane Birungi, a senior nursing officer attached to Ntungamo Municipal health center IV who succumbed to stomach cancer at Mulago Hospital. The burial was held at Rukindo cell Ntungamo municipality.
In July 2017, the Ntungamo District council passed a resolution to create two more districts named Kajara and Rushenyi and Ntungamo out of the current Ntungamo District as a way of reducing unemployment amongst youths in the region.
Ntungamo District is one of largest districts in the country with a population estimated at 500,000 people making it hard to extend services to its citizens, according to local leaders.
However, the motion was rejected by President Museveni who said splitting it would increase tax burden on citizens since they would need to raise money to run the new district.
