Makerere VC hails Daily Monitor journalist over police brutality award photo

KAMPALA. Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has hailed Daily Monitor’s, Mr Alex Esagala for his triumph in the Uganda Press Photo Award recently.
Handing Mr Esagala a plaque in his office at Makerere main campus, Prof Nawangwe on Wednesday said he was happy with the strides he had achieved in the journalism space so far.

“This is a wonderful achievement so far. You can even do better because I know you have the potential in this field,” he said.
Mr Esagala has won photojournalism awards for two consecutive years now. Last year, he was named the overall winner of photojournalism in the Africa Centre for Media Excellence Awards, 2016/17.

Prof Nawangwe said he has followed Mr Esagala’s path in the field and despite his negative photo on the university name, the award was deserving of him.
“A photo speaks a thousand words. Thank you for freezing that moment and indeed all your works have been excellent. It is not a good photo for us but you deserve the accolade,” he said.

Mr Esagala who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communication from Makerere University in 2015 said his success is attributed to his classwork and the good nurturing from his editors.
“I am sure I am not where I should be but I am sure I am not where I was when I left school and when I first stepped at Daily Monitor. All these institutions have been so instrumental in making the person that I am today,” he said.
