Kampala. Local based players continue the fight to get into Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre’s Tanzanian job books at Lugogo ahead of next weekend’s Afcon showdown in Dar es Salaam.
The area facing the stiffest competition is the midfield. Thirty-one local based players are battling to make the nine that Desabre wants to take to a residential camp in Egypt this Sunday before connecting to Tanzania.
With Police’s Juma Balinya driving in full lights as he added a hat-trick to his league collection on Wednesday, where he leads the charts on 16 goals, Brian Majwega – back in the Cranes set-up – and SC Villa’s Bashir Mutanda are also unrelenting in the chase. “I knew that if I played well for my team I would have a chance,” explained Majwega, who has rediscovered himself after crossing from URA to Maroons.
“And I think I have done that; that’s the reason am here. I think that’s why the coach called me.
“I know the days are numbered but am not under pressure. The bottom line is to continue putting in the work and see what happens.
“I missed Afcon in Gabon (2017) but I have another chance at this. Every player’s dream is to play at the Nations Cup and that is my target.”

Form for SC Villa
Mutanda, SC Villa’s lighting star in a rather unfamiliar season, also believes his overall contribution to his struggling club, in which he has scored 13 goals so far, must have made an impact; the reason he is here.
“I have waited for this chance for a long time and am working very hard to stay in the team,” Mutanda, three goals behind Balinya in the top-flight league charts, said after yesterday’s training at Lugogo.
The coach said he likes hungry and aggressive players, and am working well with my colleagues, am scoring goals.in training, so am hopeful I’ll stay in the team.”
The Cranes will play against Kampala Region Select side at Lugogo tomorrow, in which Desabre will select nine players, who will join 15 foreign based stars for a residential training in Ismailia, Egypt until Saturday, when they connect to Dar es Salaam.
Uganda qualified for the 2019 Nations Cup finals with a match to spare and will make it with a record 16 points with victory over the Taifa Stars.
