Luweero Anglican priest committed to High Court for trial over defilement

A top Anglican priest attached to Luweero Diocese has been remanded to Nakasongola Prison facility for unspecified period of time after he was committed to High Court to stand trial over charge of aggravated defilement.

Chief Magistrate Court in Luweero District presided over by Ms Juliet Harty Hatanga committed the Rev Canon Kezekia Kalule to High Court mandated to try cases of capital nature. Canon Kalule, 62 had earlier been arraigned before the magistrate after prosecution alleged that he defiled an underage girl.
Ms Gertrude Apio, the State Prosecutor on June 8 told Court that Rev Canon Kalule,62 a resident of Kyampisi village in Bamunanika Sub-county between October 2017 and November 2017 defiled a 16-year -old girl under his ward.

While committing the suspect to High Court, the magistrate said her Court had no jurisdiction to try the case which is of capital nature.
On May 23, the priest then attached to Luteete Archdeacon in Bamunanika Sub County was arrested by police after relatives of the victim reported the matter to police. It is alleged that the girl who is now pregnant was denied chance to join Senior One after all schools rejected her application after finding out that she was pregnant.
