Lira pastor linked to South Sudan rebels commits suicide

LIRA. Lira-based Pastor Jorom Opio who was earlier this year linked to South Sudanese SPLM-O rebel group has committed suicide.

Pastor Opio Jorom was rushed to Lira Referral Hospital on Friday at around midday while in critical condition after neighbours discovered him unconscious in his house at Junior Quarters near Adyel Division headquarters Lira town according to his wife, Ms Lucy Jorom.
Ms Jorom said her husband took poison that claimed his life.
“He returned home on Thursday night unusually drunk and I heard him call one of his sisters and told her that he was meant to go for a long journey,” she said.

Although she did not bother to clarify on her husband’s journey, Ms Jorom said she got a call from neighbours who demanded her to rush home at around 1:00 pm since her husband was in a critical state.
“At 2PM we arrived her at the hospital but we couldn’t help anymore as he was pronounced dead by medics three hours later,” she said.
Ms Jorom only said that since her husband’s release from military detention, he has been living a solitary life but could not explain the cause of his suicide.
Pastor Jorom was arrested in March by security operatives from Lira town and put in military detention for about three months.
According to the UPDF, the pastor was suspected to be recruiting Ugandan youth to serve in the South rebel group.
