Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Rtd Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu has said his consultations throughout the country following his defeat as the president of the largest opposition party in the country at the end of last year should not be seen as wishing to take his supporters away and leave the party.
Speaking on Thursday during a consultative meeting with the FDC and other opinion leaders in Ntungamo District held at Kitabire Cottages at his home town of Rwashamaire Ntungamo District, he said while he has contemplated the move of leaving FDC, he still needs to consider a lot of things before making the right decision.
“I will not fear to walk away even if I am alone, if I feel am right. Forming a party or leaving FDC does not require me travelling the whole country, when we began FDC we sat in Kampala and announced and we later went on the ground,” Gen Muntu said.

He said while there were people asking him, to start his own political party it was one thing that is hard to begin and sustain though he may not fear to begin one.

“Those who are saying we start a (political) party, beginning a party is not a simple thing. We have spent 14 years building FDC. There are over 30 parties in Uganda but how many do you know? Only 5 have representation in parliament,” he said.

“When we left Namboole in December (2017) people were so angry they wanted us to start and form and part ways with FDC. There were eminent disagreements in the party. Ideology is part of the disagreement. While we disagree we need to avoid wars. I can’t become a vehicle for those who like wars. If we must part ways (with FDC) I should not be seen as leaving over anger or wars. We must leave rumors and build.”

“This is why I tell you I will not fear to begin even if I am alone. I will go so longer as I believe I am right. If the disagreement is based on facts the truth will come out. I will never fear to begin,” he said.

He said he was making consultations in agreement with current FDC party president Patrick Amuriat Oboi whom he talked to before he began and will also make a report to him when he is done with the remaining two consultative meetings in Rukungiri and in the central region. Ntungamo meeting was the 20th in a series.

On supporting Mr Kassiano Wadri in Arua, Gen Muntu said fronting of Mr Bruce Musema as the flag bearer for the election was not based on principle of the party constitution as the contest did not arise from a court decision which the constitution stipulates that the party must steak to the flag bearer. He also said Mr Kassiano was supported by all except 5 of the entire party executive in Arua and the district leadership though was a weak candidate yet they badly wanted to win the election to send a message to President Museveni that he can lose what he had gained.

He also said Dr Kizza Besigye was right to support Mr Amuriat as party president against him because they never agreed on the principles of running the party.
