Megha Industries Limited, a mattress manufacturing firm in Kyambogo near Kampala, has been gutted by fire.

A warehouse block where an unspecified number of mattresses were stored, was completely damaged by the fire.

Mr Godfrey Okobo, a Fire Prevention Officer, said they received the first distress call at 4:59pm and the first response trucks arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later.

“The fire that gutted Megha Industries today at around 1700hrs has been extinguished with no death registered. Investigations are ongoing to determine what could have led to the fire,” police said.

However, Mr Mukesh Patel, one of the proprietors of the business, said he suspects that the fire was caused by an electric short circuit.

He said they had contracted a steel fabricator to repair some metallic sections.

“We were replacing the old metallic gutters at one of the blocks. We saved some mattresses but at least no life was lost,” he said.
