Kampala. Eight wins and a draw is a statistic that any side in the world would pride in.
That is KCCA’s home record on the continent since Mike Mutebi took over three years ago.
Actually, only former African champions Mamelodi Sundowns have since left Uganda unscathed, the South Africans taking a 1-1 spoil last year.
Such an impressive feat, which claimed Fus Rabat, Club Africain, Primero de Agosto, Rivers United and most recently Al Ahly among others is one to worry even the very best. That is the task Tunisian giants Esperance face as they arrive in the country for Saturday’s return leg of the Caf Champions League Group A match at Namboole. But is it that straight-forward?
While KCCA remain with a huge away puzzle to solve, Esperance – whose last visit to the then KCC ended 3-1 in their favour in 1997, are some of the decent tourists on the continent.

Victory over Sundowns
Of their last eight away continental matches, the Tunisians only away loss came early last year at Guinea side Horoya AC.
They have won just one of the eight, a 2-1 away victory over Sundowns but have most importantly picked a point from each of the rest – an ingredient that has eluded KCCA and hurt the Ugandans quarterfinal dreams last season.
Esperance’s away record – they have now drawn all their three away matches this year – is one to really concern KCCA, whose major hope is to claim nine home points and scramble for atleast one, which would be a first in recent times, away.
“Like I said, since we were pooled together,” said KCCA manager Mike Mutebi, “We are not afraid of anybody.
“Make no mistake, we will respect Esperance but we believe in ourselves to win the game and win it playing our way.”
KCCA’s formidable home run indeed gives them firm confidence, but Esperance’s decent form on the road will encourage the visitors while keeping the hosts in check.
