Nigeria’s Enyimba (pictured), who take on Rayon Sports of Rwanda in the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final this weekend, said on Friday they had suspended captain Mfon Udo.
The club, based in the southern city of Aba, said the 26-year-old striker had been sanctioned for “gross misconduct”, without elaborating.
The first leg of the match takes place in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, on Sunday.
“Mfon Udo is under suspension,” said Enyimba chairman Felix Anyansi-Agwu. “The issue happened last week but we didn’t make it public.”
Anyansi-Agwu said Udo was aware but the player himself said he had not been notified and was “shocked and surprised” to find out from the media.
“I’m hearing this for the very first time because if I did, I would have told you. But nothing like that happened,” said Udo, who has two full international caps for Nigeria.
He insisted he was now a free agent as his contract with Enyimba had run out at the end of last season.
