Kampala. Medical doctors, Rotarians and leaders from Bunyole in eastern Uganda have launched a scholarship fund to promote the late Dr Margaret Mungherera’s passion for girl-child education.
Speaking at a dinner to raise money for the next batch of beneficiaries, Mr David Mulabi, the president Naanghirisa Development Association, said the fund intends to fulfill Dr Mungherera’s vision of having more girls from Bunyole, where she hailed from, to pursue sciences to join the medical profession.
“We had the inaugural meeting to launch this association in Butaleja District in 2016 where the late Dr Mungherera was the guest speaker because we considered her an icon of success,” he said.
“She was passionate about girls studying sciences to enrol for medicine and nursing and last year, we sponsored four girls in O-level and one girl in A-level,” he added.
Dr Okwaro Obuku, the president Uganda Medical Association, attributed the recent government increment of medical workers’ salaries to the fallen doctor’s efforts.
He added that the association is mobilising medical doctors in the country to contribute towards the scholarship fund.
Mr Peter Muliira, a lawyer and a member of Rotary Club of Kampala East, which the fallen doctor subscribed to, revealed that the club kicked off the scholarship fund with a contribution of Shs5 million.
