ARUA- Police Friday fired teargas and  live bullets to disperse a rowdy group of people at the launch of an anti-poverty fund by socialite Brian Kirumira aka Bryan White at Arua Hill Grounds, in Arua town.

The event that started peacefully, ended prematurely when some youth demanded an equal share of the money that was being distributed.

More chaos ensued when some people started stoning Bryan White Foundation crew members.

Police responded by firing tear gas and live bullets in the air to disperse the agitated group of people.

An unidentified man sustained a deep gunshot wound on the leg.

Police rushed him to Arua Regional Referral Hospital to get medical attention.

Bryan White was whisked away by his crew members to an unknown destination.

The agitated youth broke dozens of plastic chairs in the ensuing melee.

The chaos caused confusion and diversion of traffic from Arua-Nebbi Road to Enyau Road as the riot policemen pursued the youth.

Bryan White kicked off his one week tour in Arua on Saturday last week. The foundation has earmarked Shs7 billion to be distributed to various groups of people in Arua District.

West Nile Regional Police Commander, Mr Jonathan Musinguzi blamed the chaos on “various thugs” who attended the event.

“They wanted to loot items that were being distributed,” Mr Musinguzi said.

He said: “In Arua, some youth always want to take advantage of any situation. Self-control is key in any event because in future, we may be forced to stop some of the events and the municipality will lose the money from such events.”

Earlier, Bryan White said he has introduced the Bryan White Fund, under which, beneficiaries will receive interest-free loans to selected individuals organised in SACCOs.
