NAKASEKE- President Museveni has opened a new tiles factory in Nakaseke District that the Chinese owners said, alongside eight other plants in the same Liao Shen Industrial Park, employs 2,000 people.

“The Chinese are not just talkers, but doers,” the President said while commissioning the factory formally called Goodwill Ceramic and Tiles Factory.

He added: “We have our friends who are very good at talking; lecturing us on many other subjects and stop at that. This is not the way the Chinese work.”

The investment is projected to save Uganda up $35m (Shs139b) in import-substitution, Mr Museveni said, promising to resolve problems of unreliable and high power/water charges that the investors raised.

Goodwill Ceramics Company limited began producing tiles at the Shs11.4b factory in May 2018, making 200 different tile designs for both local and international markets using 90 per cent locally-sourced raw materials.

The factory has a production capacity of 40,000 square metres of tiles per day, according to Liao Shen Industrial Park Director Lui Ming Shu.

Mr Zheng Zhuuang, the Chinese ambassador to Uganda, said the investment underlined the great and still growing Uganda-China relations.

Ministers Amelia Kyambadde (Trade) and Evelyn Anite (State, Investment) reported that the manufacturing sector is on a roller-coaster, with five factories in different parts of the country opened over past two months.

President Museveni warned lazy and bribe-taking bureaucrats to resign or risk being sacked.

“We still have these lazy armchair officers at the different offices who continue to disturb our people; the investors. I will chase all these saboteurs,” he said.

Investors must be facilitated to bring in expert skills, Mr Museveni said, instead of being frustrated through increased work permit rates and other bureaucratic procedure.
